We just hosted the 4th Music for Head & Heart showcase at The Old Woollen in Leeds and it was one of those “I was there!” nights! Martin Simpson is always a stunning performer live, but this was even by his standards an extraordinary night of music magic. After the first 50 minutes he commented “I feel like I’ll just keep going, rather than take a break” and continued to play for another hour to the audience’s absolute delight!
You could hear a pin drop…
In an era where audiences often are on their phones or talking at the bar, once again this Music for The Head and Heart showcase attracted a listening audience. You could literally hear a pin drop throughout the evening and the sound was absolutely extraordinary. This was another packed out event and the audience absolutely loved Martin’s stories about the inspiration for many of his songs.

This was a masterclass in entertainment and a number of the audience were seasoned Simpson enthusiasts as well as totally new to his work. I’ve always maintained that the mark of a really great artist is to hold an audience’s attention in a solo capacity with a single instrument. Over the years I’ve only seen a few artists achieve this including the very first Tori Amos tour in the UK. Prior to this showcase I interviewed Martin about his musical journey which was truly fascinating.
Support from The Small Change Diaries
My band “The Small Change Diaries” were the support for the evening and played a set dating back to their first two albums supported by Jon Burr. We made sure we rehearsed extensively ahead of this evening and were well received by the audience. I was happy with our set and we had great sound production from Carl Rosamond. Special thanks also to Daz Hull for help on the night and everyone who came out.
