I just returned from Martin Simpson’s 70th birthday bash and my head is still reeling from the great music and discussion. People travelled far and wide to attend and Kit Baily did a brilliant job in organising this evening. I can’t believe Martin Simpson is 70 and he just gets better and better with each music release and live appearance.
The 10 piece ensemble played the most joyous music, inlcuding some truly powerhouse artists including Nancy Kerr, James Fagen, Andy Cutting and the man himself. Music really doesn’t get any better than this, pure magic!
The Martin Simpson story
I’ve been listening to Martin for decades and in recent years have had the great opportunity to attend his workshops and spend considerable amounts on 1 – 1 time with him. In recent times I recorded an interview with him in advance of the May 20th showcase in Leeds at The Old Woollen. Even though I have known Martin for many years, I didn’t know the fascinating backstory of how he had his big break is supporting Steeleye Span, discussed below. I never tire of listening to his music and the new Magpie Arc ensemble is a whole new musical journey.
The Times they are a changing…
I’ve been listening to Martin for decades and some of my favorite albums include “True Stories”, “Rooted”, “Vigrant Stanzas” and “Cool and Unusual” He’s always pushing forward musically with great lyrics and terrific melodies. He has also recorded some amazing cover versions including this one, which he played during one of our individual meet ups. I’d never heard him play this Dylan track and was blown away when hearing it.
Live and in person in Leeds May 20th
Its my absolute joy to be hosting Martin in Leeds on May 20th and tickets are flying for this event at The Old Woollen in Leeds. This promises to be another “I was there!” nights in this fantastic all seated venue. Last year I hosted Jon Gomm and this 2023 event promises to be pure magic as Martin is an amazing live performer with brilliant songs, great storytelling and mind blowing playing.
The world is certainly a better place for such great creativity, happy 70th buddy!
